Eastern Group of Temples, Khajuraho

A kilometer towards the east from the western group of Temples is the khajur sagar and the old villahe of Khajuraho. On one of the paths to the village is a mordern whitewashed structure with a large orange - red statue within. The statue is still worshipped but is one of the oldest images to be found in khajuraho.The images is of hanuman, the monkey king who assisted Ram ( of the ramayana ) through his travails in exile.

The village is lovely and as yet quite unspoilt, but everyday the damaging imprints of 'mordenization' appear. The old houses are built around a red bricks with tiled, gently sloping roofs. The house is built around a central courtyard which is used for common household activities of washing and drying. The rooms built around the central space are cool with low ceilings and thick whitewashed walls. Occasionally one see lovely painted motifs along the doorway and windows created by the woman of the house. The village houses are built very close together. The narrow lanes are cobbled, and widen only where two lanes meet for the community well. Statues and bits of ancient sculpture are still found lying scattered around, supporting a roof or resting against a wall. the childeren of the village have seen foreign tourists all their lives and speak many languages - English, French or even Japanese.
