Bandhavgarh National Park
IndroductionThis is one if the most beautiful national parks of Madhya Pradesh. The park is situated about 225 kilometers from Khajuraho in Shahdol district. Cars and buses are available on hire from Khajuraho to take you to Bandhavgarh National Park. The nearest railway station to Bandhavgarh is the Umaria railway station and the distance is about 35 kilometers.The best months to visit Bandhavgarh is between the months of November and march. It is suggested that you plan to spend two or three days to see the park. There is now a variety of accommodation to suit every budget. The Bandhavgarh National Park covers an area of 437 square kilometers, the park is dominated by the majestic Bandhavgarh fort built in the 14th century, with amazing early stone sculptures of the incarnations of Vishnu. There are historic caves in the fort and surrounding areas which have inscriptions that date back to the 2nd century VC to the 2nd Century AD. There are many species of animals, birds and insects and plant life to be found inside the park. Organized elephant or jeep rides through the many different areas of the park enable you to see animals in their natural habitat. The spotted deer, the Indian gazelle or Chinkara, Nilgai, Sambar, wild boar, the tiny barking deer are frequently sighted. The sloth bear, bison, tiger and leopard are much more shy and correspondingly a rarer sight. There are a variety of eagles ( including the regal serpent eagle ), water fowl and storks, ibis, rare hornbills and the colorful golden-backed woodpecker. Teh park has beautiful grasslands and groves of bamboo.
